Philharmonic experience

On Saturday it was first time I went to Warsaw Philharmonic and now I’m hooked.

I already bought ticket for this Friday, when Mendelssohn’s violin concerto will be performed, among others. Never heard it before, but I’m in love with it and can’t wait to hear it live.

On Saturday I went with Ania, who, as it turned out, had some kind of uneasiness disorder and it was difficult for her to sit motionless for relatively long.

When we left, she commented that it must be so hard for the composers to compose these things where so many tracks are developing simultaneously and that they must had been schizophrenic in order to do that. Which in my opinion makes little sense because being schizophrenic, to me, amounts to having multiple personalities kicking in randomly, not like hearing in stereo or something.

And she heard Tolkien was schizophrenic too. Whatever.

Plaxo: making sense of it

I start to get some clue on how Plaxo can be useful. Interestingly, many of my friends are already in, but I’m yet to hear from any of them on any usage for it.

The cool thing that Plaxo can do is gather rss feeds from a number of sites that you may be already using. Say, you publish your pictures on flickr, share favorite articles in Google Reader (this was actually new to me, more below), update your profile on myspace, etc. All these sites publish feed with updates, which Plaxo can import and aggregate.

Result? Your friends can track your activity across all sites in one place – Plaxo.

Now, two problems with this idea and my friends .

First, they usually have no idea what is “feed”.

Second, they barely use any of the sites other than Linkedin (which doesn’t have a public feed, btw), and maybe some Polish sites (like Goldenline), which also have no feed.

There is little to aggregate in their case.

But I start to like the overall idea of Plaxo (and there maybe more to it which I didn’t bother to find out yet). I added this blog’s feed and it gets aggregated pretty well.

Also I accidentally discovered “shared items” functionality in Google Reader while trying to figure Plaxo. When I “share” the item that I like you can see it on this page. Nice, I will try to share some interesting stuff from time to time.

Not a nice scenario: run on Internet banks

There is an interesting article by Anna Lach in Bank (I read it through onet though), presenting a possibility of a run on Internet banks.

Note that probability of such event is very low currently: all Internet banks in Poland belong to strong financial groups, and Polish banking sector in general is healthy and boasts record profits.

However, the scenario in which people are able to withdraw their funds by doing a few clicks (instead of crowding in front of the branches) based on a rumor – and rumors can now circulate faster thanks to also Internet – is quite scary. Also, deposit accounts of Internet banks have usually very liberal conditions of withdrawing the funds before maturity.

Zakopane on Google Maps

Google just added “terrain” view to its maps, Warsaw is flat so not much to see, but look at Zakopane:

Zakopane on Google Maps

Pretty nice, even though resolution seems to be lower than in the US.
